Mathematics Qualifying Examination (MQE)

must take the Mathematics Qualifying Exam (MQE) or have a Mathematics Department approved exemption. No student will be enrolled in these mathematics courses unless he or she has already passed the MQE or is exempt. The examination scores are valid for two consecutive semesters.
You will have 60 minutes to complete the Mathematics Qualifying Exam (MQE). The MQE consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. In scoring the test only correct answers will be counted. If you have no idea which of the answers to a given question is the correct one, you should leave the question blank. If you happen to guess correctly answers to questions that you do not understand, you may be advised to take a course for which you are not adequately prepared.
Calculators are not needed and may not be used on the MQE.
To be exempt from the MQE, students must have:
| For MATH 130 & MATH 135: a "C" or better in MATH 115 or MATH 125 at CSUF or equivalent course. | |
| For MATH 150A: a "C" or better in MATH 125 or equivalent course. | |
| One semester of high school calculus with a C or better | |
| Any score on the Advanced Placement Examination for Mathematics sections A&B or B&C. |
If you have taken an equivalent math course at another college, you must submit a copy of your transcript or course grade, a course description and a course syllabus to the Mathematics Department prior to registering for MATH 130, MATH 135, or MATH 150A.

You can register for the MQE either by mail or in-person.
| To register for the MQE through the mail, fill out the registration form and send it together with a $3 check (payable to CSUF) to Student Financial Services (UH-180), P.O. Box 6808, Fullerton, CA 92834-6808 by the registration deadline. Your mail-in application must reach Student Financial Services by the registration deadline. | |
| To register for the MQE in-person, fill out the registration form and take the completed form to Student Financial Services (UH-180) with your $3 fee. Payment must reach Student Financial Services by the registration deadline. |
Whether you register for the MQE by mail or in-person, you will receive an email confirmation of your MQE registration and further information about the test approximately one week after you pay your test fee.
Special Accommodations. If you have a disability that requires special accommodations or if you are unable to test on Saturdays because of religious convictions, you should contact University Testing Services prior to the registration deadline.

Test Date Change. You may also change your test date by
contacting the Testing Services office at least 24 hours before your scheduled test date.
Standby Registration. You should make every effort to register before the test registration deadline. In an emergency, however, it may be possible for you to take the MQE even though you are not registered for the test. Standby registrants will be admitted only if sufficient space and testing materials are available. Contact the University Testing Center at 657-278-3838 for detailed standby instructions.
Your examination results will be posted outside the Mathematics Department Office, McCarthy Hall, Room 154, one week after the test. Scores will not be given over the telephone.
Passing scores on the MQE are as follows:
| 18 or more answers correct (out of a total of 40 questions) allows entrance to MATH 130 | |
| 22 or more answers correct (out of a total of 40 questions) allows entrance to MATH 135 | |
| 25 or more answers correct (out of a total of 40 questions) allows entrance to MATH 150A |
