Orange
County Reads One Book, Year Two
Orange County Reads One Book began as the spark of a dream
in July 2002, when the Orange County Community Foundation
encouraged the concept and agreed to support the program
through a seed grant. The program is modeled on the experiences
of other “One Book, One City” efforts, first
initiated by a librarian from Seattle in 1998 when she said,
“What would happen if all of Seattle read the same
book?” Soon other communities joined in, today more
than 200 throughout America and other countries too, but
only a couple of counties have been known to try it and
none the size or influence of Orange County, until the summer
of 2002. The mission of the Orange County Reads One Book
project is to
•
Increase reading and literacy
• Strengthen community building
Develop multi-cultural understanding and multi-generational
dialogue.
March 21-April 3, 2004 are the official book weeks. For
