NSM College Career Specialist, Chanda Ishisaka took a group of 26 students for a company site visit to HBT Labs, which included Project RAISE students and other NSM students. HBT Labs is a small pharmaceutical company in Brea that creates injectable drugs, such as a drug to treat schizophrenia. They made it a fun and interactive tour. Students got to meet with the company president, try opening and using a syringe, visit the Chemistry lab, Microbiology lab, and get gowned up to go into the clean lab where they manufacture the product.

biotechnology Industry Bootcamp

On 4 April 2019, 21 students and one ECS/Mihaylo professor attended the Biotechnology Industry Bootcamp hosted by Keck Graduate Institute (KGI). The KGI Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Joel West, explained to the students the different career paths in life sciences for the biotechnology industry. Then, he had the students get into groups of three. Each team had to pick a science product that was created by a biotech company, and give a group presentation about their product (i.e. what disease is this product treating, how many people are affected by this disease, and a description of the company).
