Brother 2 Brother Peer Mentor Program

The Male Success Initiative Success Coaches [B2B Mentors] work in tandem with the MSI staff in addition to support the continued devolvement of our MSI-Success Brothers. The team of undergraduate B2B Mentors is designed to support the unique needs of our undergraduate men of color at CSUF particularly our MSI-Success Brothers.

Our Peer 2 Peer Mentor-based program will provide tailored mentoring services for men of color via academic guidance, social transition, leadership & networking development, community in-reach, identity intersectionality awareness, and pre/post-graduation support. 

Program Goals:

  • Promote academic excellence and provide insight on available resources that will assist participants with persistence through graduation.
  • Assist participants with identity exploration through holistic personal development.
  • Establish service learning projects to cultivate institutional and community collaborations and civic engagement.
  • Effectively guide and support both professional and leadership development of program participants.

 

What is a mentor / peer mentor?

A mentor is defined as a knowledgeable and experienced guide, a trusted ally, advocate and a caring role model. Therefore, a B2B Mentors is a form of mentorship that usually takes place between a person who has lived through specific experiences at CSUF and a person new to those same or similar experiences attending CSUF

 

Who can serve as a peer mentor?

Currently fulltime enrolled juniors, seniors, graduate students and MSI-Fullerton Brothers. As specific emphasis is put on upperclassmen, special exceptions may be made for sophomores who exemplify academic excellence, high social aptitude, responsibility and a commitment to service. Peer mentors will be trained to assist and support freshman and sophomore MSI-Fullerton Brothers in their academic, personal, pre-professional, and leadership development.

 

What are the minimum qualifications/requirements of Brother 2 Brother Mentors?

  •  B2B Mentors will have no less than a 2.7 GPA upon applying for the position and must maintain this GPA while working with the program.
  • B2B Mentors must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units per semester and be in good academic standing with no active academic probation. (Special consideration will be given to highly qualified seniors and graduate students)
  •  B2B Mentors must have strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, be self-motivated and have an extensive knowledge of campus resources. Furthermore, they must be dependable, flexible, be able to relate well to a variety of people and backgrounds, respect the confidentiality of students, have strong reading, writing and analytical skills, be friendly, patient and have a good sense of humor.
  • B2B Mentors need to demonstrate behavior appropriate to working one-on-one or in groups with mentees; said behavior is furthermore discussed in the Brother 2 Brother Peer Mentor training manual available to mentors upon selection and hire.
  • B2B Mentors will commit to a minimum of eight hours of mandatory training broken up into two days.
  • B2B Mentors will commit to at least five hours of meeting time per month:
    o Once a week, one-hour meeting with mentee.
    o Once a month, one-hour meeting with fellow mentors
