CURRENT PROJECTS
On this page you will find information related to projects connecting future and current CSUF teachers of mathematics to local schools.
Project Infusing Data Science into Elementary Education Mathematics (IDEEM) (Summer 2024 and 2025)
Project Infusing Data Science Education into Elementary Mathematics (IDEEM) is a $75,000 professional development grant awarded by the California State University's Chancellor's Office to Drs Bridget Druken (PI), Cherie Ichinose (Co-PI), Jessica Jaynes (Co-PI) of the Department of Mathematics and Mallika Scott (Co-PI) of the Department of Elementary and Bilingual Education. Project IDEEM will host two four-day summer workshops in June 2024 and June 2025 serving 50 credentialed teachers to increase TK-5 data literacy.
Teachers will engage in practical, hands-on learning activities that can be infused into their existing math and elementary curricula. Two goals for Project IDEEM teacher participants are:
-
To strengthen content knowledge of data science concepts for TK-5 elementary teachers.
-
To gain experience infusing data science activities into existing TK-5 elementary curricula.

PREVIOUS PROJECTS
The following are previous projects that I have been involved with.
LEARN TO CROCHET: THE MATHEMATICS OF CROCHET (SPRING 2023 & 2024)
Hosted five workshops during Springs of 2023 and 2024 to the CSUF community that taught beginners how to crochet with a mathematical perspective.
PILOTS for Math (2021-2022)
Preparing Instructors for Learning Online Teaching, Technologies, and Social Justice for Mathematics (PILOTS for Math) is a 2021-2022 grant program funded by the Mathematical Association of America and the Math Science Teaching Initiative at CSUF.
PILOTS for Math project will support students in earning a $1,200 scholarship and gaining valuable math education skills prior to starting a credential program. The three-fold mission is to:
- encourage talented mathematics and liberal studies majors to become highly- qualified in intersection of online math teaching, math technologies, and mathematics for social justice,
- explore math technologies like Desmos, GeoGebra, and CODAP useful for teaching K-12 math by attending virtual monthly workshops, and
- create, revise, and pilot math tasks to local CSUF communities with fellow PILOTS in a virtual setting.

MSTI PRISE SUMMER INTERNSHIP FOR MATH TEACHERS (SUMMER 2019)
The PRISE Summer Internship for Science or Mathematics teachers is a program at California State University, Fullerton funded by the Matheamtics and Science Teacher Initiative for future teachers. It is open to junior, senior, or post-baccalaureate students working toward becoming science or mathematics teachers. In Summer 2019, I supported six CSUF credential candidates as they worked as co-teacher interns with practicing elementary and middle school teachers in a summer math camp in Orange Unified School District.
