Allied Health Professions Overview
Allied Health Professionals perform diagnostic procedures, provide therapeutic services, and patient care as part of a caregiving team.
Allied Health professionals are involved with the delivery of health or related services pertaining to the identification, evaluation and prevention of diseases and disorders; dietary and nutrition services; rehabilitation and health systems management, among others. Allied Health professionals do not independently diagnose and prescribe treatment, but perform diagnostic procedures, therapeutic services, and provide care as requested by doctors practicing in the particular area.
In recent years new professions have emerged that in some sense have intermediary roles, with varying levels of autonomy in how they may practice (for instance, Nurse Practitioners in some states are independent primary care providers who may diagnose and write prescriptions). Since the divisions among the professions are created essentially through governmental regulations they sometimes vary from state to state, and may continue to change over time. Such advance practice clinicians (or mid-level providers) have a minimum of a bachelor's degree and most have also completed post baccalaureate or graduate level education.
Audiology
Audiologists are licensed health-care professionals who diagnose, treat, and manage hearing loss and balance disorders for adults and children.
Chiropractic Medicine
Chiropractors are primary care professionals and play a vital, life-changing role. Chiropractic relieves pain, increases mobility and optimizes performance through safe and effective spinal adjustments and manipulation.
MS in Anesthesia
Anesthesiologist assistants (AA), also referred to as anesthetists, work cooperatively under the direction of an anesthesiologist to implement the anesthesia care plan. AAs are trained in a professional graduate level program and earn a Master of Science degree.
Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances which encourage the person's inherent self-healing process, the vis medicatrix naturae.
Occupational Therapy
Your life is made up of occupations; meaningful everyday activities. These occupations can include many roles, such as being a parent, a friend, a spouse, all occupations until we have trouble doing them.
