The Student Health Professions Association (SHPA) at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) is dedicated to informing the students of CSUF about the opportunities available in the various health professions. SHPA is a great place for students who aren't quite sure of which profession they want to enter, to join. The invited speakers range from long term practicing professionals to students who have just entered a health profession graduate school (as well as admissions committee members). By having an array of speakers, the members are exposed to multiple aspects of the various health professions. Furthermore, the club provides volunteer opportunities for students to get involved in the community, campus life, American Red Cross blood drives, and work closely with the Health Professions Advising office which is dedicated to assisting students in getting admitted to health profession graduate schools.
AMSA is a wonderful option for students interested in going to medical school. The American Medical Student Association is committed to improving health care and healthcare delivery to all people; promoting active improvement in medical education; involving its members in the social, moral and ethical obligations of the profession of medicine; assisting in the improvement and understanding of world health problems; contributing to the welfare of medical students, premedical students, interns, residents and post-MD/DO trainees; and advancing the profession of medicine.
LMSA is a new organization being established this semester. We are excited about this new endeavor and are eager to help educate pre-medical and pre-dental students about schools, timelines, and, as a team, contribute to our local communities. LMSA is currently taking new membership applications, and are currently recruiting officers for the 2012-2013 academic year. If you are interested in becoming a member or in taking an active role as an officer, please email Mayra Cruz or Kenneth Kang at LMSAPlus@gmail.com. Membership in LMSA does not exclude you from AMSA or SHPA. All three organizations offer unique opportunities for pre-health students and involvement in more than one is encouraged.
The CSUF Pre-Optometry club is the newest student organization on campus. The purpose of the CSUF Pre-Optometry Club is for students interested in the field of Optometry to learn more about the field and interact with future colleagues. Flying Sams is a non-profit organization that provides health care to people living in El Hongo, Mexico. CSUF and UC Riverside collaborate to create the Palomar Chapter of the Flying Sams. By joining this organization, students are able to volunteer and have the opportunity to assist in administrating, translating, taking vital signs, shadowing health care providers, and working in the pharmacy. Also, members get the opportunity to experience medicine and another culture first hand.
