Increasing A-B Passing Rate in Math 125 (Pre-Calculus)

Project Lead: Zair Ibragimov and Maria Borovikov

The main goal of the project is to increase A-B passing rate in Math 125 by at least 10 percentage points. This will significantly improve 4-year graduation rate for the fist-time freshmen. Since over half of Math 125 students are URM students, this improvement in graduation rate will also decreases equity gaps. The project has two components: (1) supplementing Math 125 with a set of 300 carefully selected exercises designed to improve students’ algebra and critical thinking skills and (2) providing 20 hours of additional online instructions during Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. The proposed project is fully aligned with the CSU’s Graduation Initiative 2025 which aims to increase graduation rates, decrease time to degree and eliminating equity gaps among CSU students. Mathematics courses, particularly first-time freshmen courses such as Math 125, are significant factors in this effort. It takes new and original ideas and innovations to achieve the goals put forth in the GI2025 undertaking.
