LGBT Pride Recognition Ceremony 2013 Highlights
The 9th annual LGBT Pride Recognition Ceremony was held on Thursday, May 16, 2013. This event recognizes the accomplishments of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally students at Cal State Fullerton.
CSUF President Mildred García and CSU Chancellor Timothy White gave inspirational remarks to our LGBT and ally graduates. President Garcia challenged the 46 students to proudly represent their community at the commencement ceremonies.
Chancellor White commended the graduates for their courage and determination to be “the pioneers who will change the society’s views on inclusiveness.”
Ryka Aoki, a trans writer and a professor from Santa Monica College, was this year’s keynote speaker. Aoki applauded those who helped pave the way for LGBT rights. “My very presence here is testament to the work you and your predecessors have done to change the world—already!”
Kevin Chastain was selected as the LGBT Pride Class of 2013 student speaker. Chastain shared his experience as a gay student leader on campus. He encouraged his classmates to be bold in pursuing their dreams. Chastain graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and he will attend Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts this fall to pursue a Master of Education in Higher Education.
The Multicultural Leadership Center also produced a three-minute video about this year’s theme, “vision of possibilities.” To view the video, please visit this link: https://vimeo.com/65343827.
