California State University, Fullerton is a large, comprehensive, urban university with more than 4,100 full-and part-time faculty and staff members, and a diverse student body of 40,235 enrolled in Fall 2016. Lecturer - Emphasis in Biochemistry

Part-Time Lecturer Application Pool

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at CSUF accepts applications on an on-going basis for our pool of part-time lecturers.  Minimum qualifications for most positions include a Master's degree or terminal degree in the area of instruction or a closely related field.  Salary is commensurate with credential and experience. 

 Please be aware that all applications two years or older will be purged each year on the first business day in March.  You will need to reapply after that date if you want to be considered for the following academic year.

The university is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented groups.

An offer of employment may be contingent upon successful completion of a background check.  Should the results of a background check not be successful, any offer will be withdrawn and/or employment terminated.  Falsification of information may also be cause for termination of employment, corrective action, or rejection.  The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in the CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.  An offer of employment is contingent upon execution of an Acknowledgement of Mandated Reporter Status and Legal Duty to Report Child Abuse and Neglect Form.  Signing the form is a prerequisite to employment and failure to sign will result in any offer or employment being withdrawn.

Instructional Student Assistant & Student Assistant Positions

An Instructional Student Assistant or Student Assistant is a CSUF graduate or undergraduate student who is appointed at an hourly rate to perform teaching, grading or tutoring duties, during an academic term, under the direct supervision of an appropriate faculty member.

Duties May Include the Following:

  • Providing classroom, laboratory, and/or field instructional assistance to a faculty member or student,
  • Assisting with laboratory periods, workshops, or other course activities,
  • Administering to students course materials or assignments prepared by the supervising faculty member,
  • Grading student work and otherwise assessing student performance, and
  • Holding scheduled office hours to provide tutoring or other assistance to students.

Participation in the Laboratory Safety Class offered by the CSUF Research and Instructional Safety Office is required for continued appointment (if lab work is part of the assigned duties).

Qualifications and Hiring Criteria*

  • Currently enrolled or admitted to a CSUF degree program.
  • Knowledge of the subject matter of the course(s) to which the individual is assigned.
  • Familiarity with CSUF and Chemistry and Biochemistry Department policies and procedures on field trips, Department vehicle use, and lab safety is expected, where appropriate.
  • Ability to relate well to others within the academic environment.
  • Ability to supervise, assist, instruct, and evaluate students effectively.
  • For the initial appointment, evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work and for reappointment, agreement by research adviser if applicable. 

*Note: Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.

Classification, Salary and Continued Appointment

For subsequent appointment, the student must be in good standing, as defined by the University and Department, and the student’s previous performance must have been evaluated as satisfactory, with re-hiring recommended.

Teaching Associate Positions

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has a number of positions for Teaching Associates each semester.   A TA is a CSUF graduate student who is appointed part-time, usually to teach credit-bearing laboratory courses.  Responsibility for a course may be vested in the TA under the direct supervision of an appropriate faculty member.

Duties may include the following:

Providing classroom, laboratory, and/or field instruction, preparing course materials, preparing and administering assignments to students, administering examinations, grading student work and otherwise assessing student performance, and determining course grades, holding scheduled office hours, and meeting the expectations of TAs for the specific course, as established by the Department, supervising faculty member, and/or course laboratory coordinator.
Participation in the Laboratory Safety Class offered by the CSUF Research and Instructional Safety Office is required for all TA's within the first two weeks of the academic term for continued appointment.

Qualifications and Hiring Criteria*

  • Completion of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Currently enrolled or admitted to a CSUF Master’s degree program that is related to chemistry or biochemistry.
    • Students enrolled in credential programs are not eligible for this position.
  • Knowledge of the subject matter of the course(s) to which the individual is assigned.
  • Familiarity with CSUF and Chemistry and Biochemistry Department policies and procedures on field trips, Department vehicle use, and lab safety is expected, where appropriate.
  • Ability to relate well to others within the academic environment.
  • Ability to instruct and evaluate students effectively.
  • For the initial appointment, evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work (transcripts and/or letters of recommendation), and for reappointment, agreement by research adviser.

Classification, Salary and Continued Appointment

Chemistry and Biochemistry Department Graduate Teaching Associates are hired in Range A of Class Code 2354.

For subsequent appointment, the graduate student must be in good standing, as defined by the University and Department, and show evidence of satisfactory progress toward completion of the degree.  In addition, if previously appointed as a Chemistry and Biochemistry TA and/or GA, the student’s performance must have been evaluated as satisfactory, with re-hiring recommended.
