Administration

Anil Puri

Anil PuriI seek for your vote in the upcoming Academic Senate election for the Administration constituency. I am currently completing the unfinished term of Dr. Willie Hagan.

With a long experience as an administrator, and even a longer experience as a faculty member, I hope to bring the perspective of an academic administrator to the discussions on the senate floor.  Our campus is looking forward to changing of the guard and we can expect significant conversations to take place in how and what we do in the future.  The Academic Senate will play an important role in helping craft the future vision and plans for the university.  I look forward to your support in giving me the opportunity to participate in that effort.

Arts

Ken Walicki

Ken WalickiThis past year was my eighth year on the Academic Senate.  I have served three times on the Executive Committee, twice as a member-at-large and this past year as vice-chair.

As a member of both the Academic Senate and the Executive Committee I have consistently advocated for the College of the Arts and will continue to do so if re-elected.

I would appreciate your vote for representative of the College of the Arts on the Academic Senate.

Business and Economics

Robert Mead

Robert MeadAs a member of the CSUF community for nearly fourteen years, first as a full-time lecturer and now as a tenured faculty member, I have always held a strong interest in ensuring student learning and faculty development.  As an Academic Senator, I have worked hard to collegially foster an environment that supports both goals.  California’s prolonged fiscal malaise places enormous pressures upon us as we try to meet increasing student demand for educational access while dealing with the continuously shrinking support for faculty and students. Confronting this situation and maintaining academic quality presents continuing serious challenges to our campus community.  I have the experience and perspective to effectively represent the MCBE faculty in these difficult and transitional times. I ask for your support in the upcoming election and would be most privileged to serve you again.  Thank you.

Communications

Andi Stein

Andi SteinAs a 12-year member of the Department of Communications, I am committed to enriching the teaching and learning experiences for faculty and students. I am a strong advocate of building community on campus through collaborative partnerships. My campus activities have included serving on numerous committees within the Department and College of Communications. I have also served as an At-Large member of the Academic Senate and on University-wide committees including the International Education and Library Committees. It would be a privilege to represent the College of Communications constituency as a member of the Academic Senate and serve as an advocate for the College.

Education

Kristin Stang

Kristin StangColleagues, I hope that you will support my candidacy for a College of Education seat on the Academic Senate.  I previously served as an at-large senator from 2006-2009 and a COE senator from 2010-2012. Faculty governance is important, and the role of senator is one I take seriously. My commitment to you, if elected, is that I will be present, be an active participant in senate proceedings, and represent the needs of the College of Education, my colleagues, and our students. I thank you in advance for your participation in the election and would appreciate your vote.

Health and Human Development

Steve Walk

Steve WalkJoining the faculty at Cal State Fullerton in 1994, I have served in a number leadership roles, including chairing the University Curriculum Committee from 2001-2002 and the Athletics Advisory Council from 2002-2006.  I have also chaired several search committees, including the Assistant Vice President for Academic Programs in 2002.  I was appointed the University’s Faculty Athletics Representative by President Gordon in 2004.  In 2005, I was elected president of the largest academic society in my field.  I have served on the Academic Senate Executive Committee for the past year, a time of significant institutional change.  As Chair of the Department of Kinesiology since 2007, I meet regularly with Dean McMahan and Associate Dean Kathy Koser, and have good relationships with fellow department chairs in the College and the University.  From these perspectives, I feel I have a good understanding of the goals and unique concerns of our College.  With productive working relationships with colleagues across campus and a strong commitment to collegial governance, I seek another opportunity to represent the College of Health and Human Development in the Academic Senate.

Humanities

J. Chris Westgate

J. Chris WestgateNow completing my fifth year at CSUF in the department of English, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics, I’m eager to take a more active role in university service.  I’ve already served on two important college committee for Humanities and Social Sciences, “Faculty Awards” and “Student Scholarship and Awards,” where I enjoyed working with colleagues from across the college.  I have two priorities that I would bring to the HSS seat on the Academic Senate.  The first is a commitment to collegial governance, especially in these difficult budgetary times.  The second is interdisciplinarity, on which I have taken the lead in my department to work with programs like the Queer Studies Minor and to make connections with other departments.

Natural Sciences and Mathematics

Sean Walker

Phil ArmstrongI would like to ask for your support to continue as the Academic Senator for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.  It has been an honor to represent the college over the last two years.  During that time, I have served for one term on the Senate Executive Committee, organized a retreat to discuss Online Teaching, and worked on several other senate committees.  I have also continued my day job as a faculty member in the college.  I have published three peer-reviewed papers in the last two years, mentored undergraduate and graduate students, and taught. As a senator representing the College of NSM, I will continue work to represent our college, protect faculty rights and fight to maintain a collegial atmosphere supportive of research and teaching.

Social Sciences

Nancy Fitch
Nancy Fitch

I believe that faculty should have a strong voice in campus governance at all levels of decision-making.  To that end, I have actively participated in the Senate for much of my career at CSUF since 1986. I have also served on most major University Committees including Faculty Personnel, General Education, Curriculum, Graduate Education, and Research, as well as multiple ad hoc committees, including a number of committees on teaching with technology. I have been a strong advocate of empowering younger faculty and believe we need to provide more resources/opportunities for research and development (International Education, Employee Wellness, Faculty Development Center) to all faculty. In this time of budgetary crisis, we need to do everything we can to preserve academic freedom, high quality educational experiences for our students, and meaningful collegiality for everyone. Certainly, this involves productive working relationships with the administration to promote strong faculty governance, faculty rights, and general campus well-being.

At-Large

Bill Meyer

Bill MeyerI am asking for your vote and your support,by recommending me to your colleagues.  I wish to continue to serve the students, faculty, and staff by serving another term as an at large member of the academic senate.

We are looking at major changes in the upper administration at CSUF and will probably see more budget cuts from Sacramento. This is a time for a strong Academic Senate with experienced senators.

My experience includes serving on the CSUF Academic Senate, the Planning, Resources, and Budget Committee, the Executive Committee, the Strategic Planning Steering Committee, the Statewide Academic Senate, and many other senate committees.

I believe a vote for me is a vote for a collegial approach to problem solving and a vote for someone who will make a difference.

Reyes Fidalgo

Reyes FidalgoI am currently a member of the Academic Senate of the CSU. I have worked closely with the Faculty Affairs, and the Fiscal and Governmental Affairs committees reviewing policies and legislation that have a significant impact on the work we do and the students we serve.

I have wide experience on numerous committees for the College of H&SS, the Senate, and other university boards, e.g., General Education, Graduate Education; International Education; Planning, Budget and Resources, the Faculty Development Center; the Senate Executive Committee; and the CSU Academic Council for International Programs.

I am passionate about providing as much support as possible for junior faculty, and have worked for the defense of faculty rights in general. With your support, I look forward to continue serving at-large and to advocate for academic quality, strong faculty voice in shared governance, collegial and supportive environment, constructive collaboration with the administration, and building the academic community.

Penny Weismuller

Penny WeismullerCollegial governance is important to all of us at Cal State Fullerton and I share a strong commitment to maintaining a robust collegial voice across the University. In addition to my previous and current involvement in several University committees, including Graduate Education, Faculty Affairs, and the Academic Appeals Board, I bring important experience in collaborative governance through my prior work in Public Health with the HIV Planning Council of Orange County and my most recent work with our sister universities, Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Los Angeles, in developing a collaborative DNP Program. Collaborative governance requires respect for divergent views and a willingness to come together to forge a common understanding and foster answers that capture the best interests of all involved.  I believe I demonstrate this respect and ability to develop understanding and mutually agreeable solutions.  I would welcome the opportunity to serve you as a Senator.

Jon Bruschke

Jon BruschkeA public institution of higher education has a high calling, and when it performs well it benefits the public in nearly countless ways.  Centuries of evidence demonstrate that the university works best when dedicated learners pursue new ideas and push the limits of knowledge, limited only by ideas themselves.  Recent budgetary issues, and longer-term ideological issues, require that we remain vigilant about our mission and methods.  My hope is that the Academic Senate can manage these challenges and stay true to the best virtues of the university tradition we inherit.

The Academic Senate functions best when all points of view are debated in the open as we work toward shared goals.  As a debate coach who has watched too many public discussions stray from their central focus, I hope that I bring some skills that help the Senate keep its eye on the most important points of the most important issues.  I ask for your vote to continue making these contributions.

Scott Hewitt

A. Scott HewittI have served 10 years on the Academic Senate, 6 years on the Academic Senate Executive Committee, and 2 years as Academic Senate chair during the initial budget cuts and furloughs.  We are still in a budget crisis and will have a new upper administration this summer.  This is a time great opportunity and great risk.  I am a strong believer in collegial governance and the Fullerton Way, and have enjoyed working in the Academic Senate toward common goals as well as taking a minority stand for what I believe is in the best interest of our university.  I look forward to continuing my service to the campus community.

Mark S. Filowitz

Mark S. FilowitzI earned my bachelor’s degree at NYU and my doctorate in physical chemistry at Columbia University. I have been an active member of the Fullerton community for 25 years with my wife Joan and our two children. My career began in industry, where I was successful in both research and administration.  I joined the CSUF faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in 2000.  From 2004-2008, I co-chaired that Department with Maria Linder, and in 2008 I was appointed as the Associate Dean of the College of NSM. I chair and have chaired many committees for the campus, CNSM, and my department.  I am the Principal Investigator for a $2.5 million NSF STEP grant (TEST:UP) to improve the academic success of STEM transfer students. I am one of the principal proponents of the program in Supplemental Instruction that increases the success of STEM students in key gateway classes.

Jose Gradilla

Alexandro J. GradillaI have been on campus for seven years and in the senate for four of those seven years.  As an at-large senator I know that I represent not only my college but also the diverse constituencies on campus.  I advocate for policies and solutions that respects and upholds our campus traditions of collegial shared governance which are inclusive of faculty, staff, administrators and students.  If re-elected I will continue to push for protection and expansion of greatly needed faculty compensation for service and research.  I believe that sound assigned time policies will greatly improve faculty productivity, improve teaching and impact student success.  Furthermore these new policies will create an intellectual environment where faculty and students will collaborate on research and experience mentorship by the faculty in real world contexts. This will help our students with improved graduation rates and opening the possibility of attending graduate or professional school especially for our low income, first generation and student of color populations.  I respectfully ask for your vote.

Part-Time Faculty

Peggy B. Shoar

Peggy B. ShoarMy name is Peggy Shoar and I teach for the College of Health and Human Development. I  would be honored if you vote for me to represent the part-time faculty on the Academic Senate.  I have served the part-time faculty for three terms and would like to return to the Senate as your representative. Please support my election so that I may continue to be a strong advocate on behalf of all part-time lecturers during these uncertain times.  I am committed to making sure that your voices and concerns do not go unheard.

Pete Evanow

Pete Evanow For 11 years, I have been privileged to teach at CSUF, first in the Communications College and now, in Mihaylo.  It also has been an honor to serve you for two years on the Academic Senate, and I feel service to both the University and our respective departments is important, as you all bring such depth to your programs.

Whether we teach a single course or several, as part-time faculty members, we remain a solid, vital group of educators.  A strong connection to our campuses, whether Fullerton or Irvine, adds to the important roles we play as instructors.

As cutbacks continue, some of which may have a direct impact on us, our purpose remains essential.  I want to continue to serve our interests by representing you on the Senate, ensuring we are recognized for our contributions and in helping make a difference in our lives and those of our students.

Full Time Staff

Marian Sherman

Susan FisherMy interest in representing staff on the Academic Senate stems from my passion to enhance the quality of life and learning for staff at Cal State Fullerton.  From both my current role as Organizational Analyst for the University Business Institute (UBI) and my service on the Titan Excellence Award Committee 2009-11, I recognize the talent, dedication, and generosity staff bring to their work and how this work contributes to the Cal State Fullerton culture. I am delighted to have staff represented on the Academic Senate and would be honored to bring the opinions and concerns of staff to the Senate.

I bring: 1) 22 years of service on two CSU campuses, 2) an MBA from Cal Poly Pomona, 3) 5 years as an Organizational Development Analyst in Administration and Finance at CSUF 4) 3 years leading UBI. Please vote for me to represent you in 2012-13.

Pat Balderas

Pat BalderasI am looking forward to next year as it will be both an exciting and challenging time at CSUF.  We welcome our new president Mildred García and her vision for the campus along with continued budget uncertainties.  As the Senate will continue to guide campus policy toward success, I am seeking your support, so I may contribute to this worthy function.

As a nominee for the staff senate seat, I am well qualified because I have been the business manager for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences for the past 11 years.  I work closely with faculty, staff and administrators from academic departments and programs, campus administration and other centralized campus functions.  I believe my extensive financial and administrative background will enable me to provide significant contributions to the Senate deliberations representing the staff perspectives.  I appreciate your vote.  Thank you.

Susan Fisher

Susan FisherI have been a staff member at CSUF for 20 years.  I came to CSUF after receiving my bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Chicago, then conducting cancer research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.  Originally serving as the campus radiation safety and biosafety officer, I reported to an academic office for 10 years before moving to Administration.  I have worked with many faculty, staff and students over the years, have taught classes in Chemistry and Health Science and received my master’s degree at CSUF in Environmental Studies.  My familiarity with academic and administrative procedures, and the campus community (the people and physical structures) make me an excellent candidate for the Academic Senate.  I look forward to the opportunity to serve the campus in this capacity at this very exciting time.

Janette L. Hyder

Janette L. HyderMy name is Janette L. Hyder; I am an employee in Student Academic Services/Educational Opportunity Program (EOP).  I have been an active member of the CSUF community for over 22 years.  My commitment to the Titan Family is strong; I am the Chief Steward of my union, Academic Professionals of California (Unit 4), where I have the opportunity to represent staff employees across the CSUF campus.
