Academic Disqualification

Undergraduate students are academically disqualified if their CSUF and/or total grade point averages fall below the following GPA thresholds and based on class level (total units earned). See Table below.

When a student experiences academic disqualification, they are no longer in an "admitted/matriculated" status with CSUF. Students can take courses through Open University at CSUF to raise their CSUF GPA and become eligible for readmission to Cal State Fullerton.

To enroll in degree classes through Open University, student must complete mandatory advising at least once through either a workshop/webinar or an individual appointment with an Open University Advisor.

Academic Disqualification By Class Level

Class Level Units Earned GPA Level
Seniors 90 or more 1.95
Juniors 60-89 1.85
Sophomores 30-59 1.70
Freshmen 0-29 1.50

Steps for Regaining Good Academic Standing and Readmission to CSUF

Step 1

Before getting started and proceeding through this process, take a moment to reflect upon your experience as a student. Assess your individual goals. Do you want to earn a degree from CSUF? What changes can be made that will promote a positive outcome?

Step 2

Evaluate the primary reasons leading to your Academic Disqualification. Once your individual challenges have been identified, develop a specific plan that will allow you to raise your GPA, make sufficient progress towards a degree, and return to CSUF!

Step 3

If you plan to raise your GPA through enrolling courses via Open University, attend either a academic disqualification workshop/webinar OR meet with an Open University Advisor. Whether you attend a webinar or appointment it will be an opportunity to review your individual academic plan, learn criteria to be eligible for future readmission to CSUF, consider strategies to repair your GPA, understanding steps to enroll in courses via Open University at CSUF, and formally apply for future readmission at Cal State Apply. Keep in mind when creating your plan, only the first 24 units earned through Open University will count as cumulative units towards a degree at CSUF.

Materials Needed

The needed materials below are necessary to get the most from attending an Academic Disqualification Workshop/Webinar or meeting with an Open University Advisor:

Appoinments for previously disqualified students and for those unable to attend a workshop/webinar:

  • Previously disqualified students may make appointments with an advisor by booking a date and time on the Open University Advisor website.
  • If you are not showing an "active major," run your TDA as a "what if" major. Please view Instructions for printing your TDA and transcript above.
  • The academic disqualification advising hold is recurring and will appear ahead of each fall/spring term while in a non-admitted status. Approval from an Open University advisor is required each semester to enroll in courses through Open University. Please reach out to one of the advisors below to have your recurring disqualification advising hold waived in advance of the term you wish to enroll through Open University. Students whom need a review, may also reach out via email.
